Senior Living Options

What is the difference between assisted living and independent living options? It depends on the level of support that residents require.

  • Independent living designed for older adults who can manage ADLs independently. Independent living communities focus on social needs and offer a maintenance-free lifestyle. They may offer amenities like fitness centers, book clubs, and movie events. Independent living communities also typically provide bus or taxi services for shopping and doctor visits.

Assisted living is a housing option for people who require some help with daily tasks but don't need the intensive care of a nursing home. As of 2024, more than 818,800 Americans live in assisted living facilities, which is about 2% of seniors over 65.

Assisted living provides assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) like bathing, dressing, and eating. Assisted living communities also offer 24-hour emergency care, medication monitoring, and some medical services. Assisted living communities may be smaller to provide adequate care, and they often have full-time medical staff on-site.

A memory care unit is a residential facility that offers specialized care and housing for people with dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

  • Memory care units provide 24-hour supervision and care, including help with daily activities.

  • Memory care units have enhanced safety features, such as 24-hour security, locked doors, and alarm systems to prevent wandering.

  • Memory care is also known as dementia care or Alzheimer's care. It's the fastest-growing senior housing sector, but the quality of care can vary widely.

Choosing a memory care unit for a loved one can feel overwhelming due to the vast array of options available. We are experts ready to support your family in this process. Contact us today, and allow us to help you navigate these choices.

A personal care home is a residential facility that provides housing, meals, and assistance with daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, and medication management for senior citizens. This setting allows them to maintain some independence while receiving necessary support with everyday tasks. Essentially, it's a place where your loved one can live comfortably with access to help when needed, without requiring full nursing care.

A skilled nursing facility (SNF) is a place that provides short-term medical care and rehabilitation for people who need skilled nursing or therapy after an illness or injury:

  • Services: SNFs provide 24/7 access to nurses, doctors, and other care workers who offer a range of services, including:
    • Nursing care
    • Rehabilitation services, such as physical, occupational, and speech therapy
    • Assistance with activities of daily living
    • Medications
    • Medical supplies and equipment
    • Dietary counseling

  • Who might need to go to an SNF?  People who might need to go to an SNF include those who:
    • Have recently had a serious illness or injury, such as a heart attack, stroke, or broken bones
    • Need regular daily medical care

  • Payment? Medicare Part A may cover a limited time of SNF care under certain conditions. Medicaid may also cover some nursing home costs for people who are eligible based on income and personal resources. Long-term care insurance may also include some coverage for nursing home care.
